Steiff bear, Muzzle Bear 1908 #01538 of 5000 pcs, MIB, 18 inches, 1988. Steiff Muzzle Bear.
On the occasion of a teddy bear auction at Sotheby’s in London in May 1987, a teddy bear couple from Steiff, dating from 1908, reached a sensational record price of 13,500 British pounds.
In appreciation of this event the Steiff Company produced a replica of the smaller one of these bears in 1988/89. The MUZZLE BEAR 1908 is 46 cm tall (18 inches) and was presented as a Limited Edition of 5,000 pieces. This exceptional bear is covered in a coat of the finest mohair plush and stuffed with excelsior. The nose and claws are embroidered by hand with loving care, and the riveted muzzle is made of genuine leather. His paw pads are flesh colored, his large black eyes are glass, and he is fully jointed. He has a Steiff button in his left ear with the WHITE ribbon tag giving his Steiff number as 0174/46. The White ear tag also gives his Edition Number as #01538 of the 5,000 pieces. This bear has a beautiful face under the muzzle and a growl when it is tilted, but it does not have a box or certificate. This is a non-smoking bear from a pet free family, is in excellent condition, and would love to escape to your home to play.
The original 1908 bear represented dancing circus bear shows held by nomads traveling throughout Europe.
